Needs for MLTI Leader Role

A meeting time for: introduction to staff about the Transformation process around technology.

    How can we move from  Substitution to Augmentation and beyond.

    What is the purpose for using the technology – is there a purpose for using this!

    The kids don’t need to be taught how to do Keynote, iMovie, etc.

    Let them get this done and find the best fit for the project. Give them the freedom to find the match.

You can then look at setting up a chat room in StudyWiz having a collaborative setting for the kids.  The class will look like chaos.  Get used to it!

These are my thoughts as the presentation was in progress.

Your presence and its value!?

This is a great post about education networks, both individual and community, and the important role that they can play for our teaching and learning. I am trying to get myself up to speed on networking but find it a challenge at times.

The post looks at the added value that one brings to their professional community by having a network and presence on the internet.

“Think about that for a minute. Is your social presence, your social network, worth something? Absolutely!”

Jeff illustrates a few ideas on the value of that network. It is something that I have been working on and thought might be interesting for others to think about. I feel that if I can get it going I can have my own Professional Learning Community on the web. By posting on a blog, reading other blogs and commenting I can get a network that can help me with my teaching. Just by being there I am getting “value” and resources that I could not get other ways. Presence is the key, at what ever level you might be comfortable with. The blog roll on the left of this blog is an example of some of the blogs that I read.

Think about it! What value might it have for you?

Learning Styles and PLC’s

Union 69 is beginning to explore the benefits and use of Personal Learning Communities. This is something that sounds like a great fit for the teachers in these three small schools. Today we began with a look at learning styles as presented by MSAD 37 teacher using the work of Harvey Silver and Richard Strong.

It is not clear to me why we are looking at learning styles at this time but tomorrow may clear this up for me.

After looking at the four learning styles that they use we were shown examples of what each might look like. The following are examples about the months of the year.

Learning styles:

What about the month question.
ST – Tell me the months of the year.
SF – What is your favorite month? Why?
NT – Why do we have 12 months in a year?
NF – If you could name the months by other names what would you call them?

The discussion was looking at what do we need to learn and when. Do we need a base of knowledge to proceed and can we get it, how do we get it from one of the other learning style? Can we learn the months of the year from a creative (SF) learning style? I’m sure that we can but how do we do it?

Then we looked at how we would group our students for activities. Would they be grouped by learning styles and thus be with others who approach the problem in the same way. Or do we have groups made of different learning styles?

My thoughts are that I would like to try grouping with like learning styles. I feel, at this moment, that students would be more comfortable and safe in this arrangement and allow them to excel together rather than with being grouped with a number of students who are thinking about the problem in a much different way. I would think that it could be frustrating and less productive.

I would also think that within a group of similar style learners there would be students with varying abilities, which would provide all the positive traits of heterogeneous grouping. Ideas!

So to wrap up the day we evaluated Peanut character learning styles. In doing that I we assigned a learning style but did we? On second thought was it learning or was it their behavior style that we gave them? I bring this up because I feel that I tend to be assigning learning styles to students based on their behavior. Is that an accurate way to be looking at learning styles?
